Sports world begins to sputter under weight of fuel prices
Friday, May 09, 2008
USA Today -- Eight high schools south of Detroit announced this week they are forming a new league of schools within a 15-mile radius. The cost of gas is one major reason.

"It makes the most sense, especially in these economic times," Allen Park athletics director Ken Stephens says. "Where can you save money? You can cut down on transportation."

Stephens says it costs $490 to take the football team to Monroe — 70 miles roundtrip on two buses at $3.50 a mile. In the Downriver League, which will begin play in 2009, most roundtrips will be 20 miles or less. Allen Park currently plays in the 28-team Mega Conference.

The softball league that my eight year old granddaughter is in, is now limiting games to teams that are within 10 miles.

Whats more important a ballgame or gas. If you can afford a ballgame and 12.00 for a beer you can afford 4.00+ per gallon in life we pick and choose

In that case, they'll be filling up the cemeteries, not the prisons. And they certainly won't be missed.

It should always have been that way. If schools are going to spend money on transporation, make it for an academic meet. After all, education is their purpose, not entertainment.

It is gona get where you will even have to take your on child to school as well. Just wait and see the fuel will be so high that they won't be able to afford to do that.

They are spending our money, if it was theirs they would have done this when fuel was .99 a gallon.

Hooky, LEAREN? being funny I hope. When did school sports take away from learning? Maybe get the kids away from video games, watching television or eating might help them learn something. Maybe as a parent you should read to your kids or get involved instead of blaming school sports. Just an idea.

If your going to play, your going to pay. Don't be raising my school taxes to pay for extra curricular activities. We never had any kids so why should we have to pay? Go ahead & have a bunch of kids, but quit asking me to keep digging into my pocket to pay for them to play school sports. Your kid wants to play school sports? You pay the bill.

Fuel is small for them, "peanuts". Look how sports figures are overpaid.
Salaries are the owners problem who hire these overpaid players! Quit crying about the fuel.

In Georgia, high school sports are grouped according to their student populations, and the schools are classified and play in conferences based upon those classifications. Several of the largest schools are in my area and frequently must travel nearly 200 miles ONE WAY to play games. I think this will cause a change in play over the next couple of years.

See what can happen, when you are faced with a crisis financial or otherwise. Teams competing against each other who might not if it was not for the price of fuel crisis.
