Rail deliveries of petroleum increasing

UPI -- The Association of American Railroads said transportation of petroleum products was up nearly 50 percent this week compared to the same period last year.

The North Dakota Industrial Commission, part of the oil and natural gas division at the Department of Mineral Resources, reported this week that less than 45 percent of its daily crude oil production was delivered by pipelines. Rail and truck deliveries, it said, "are adequate to keep up with near term production projections."

AAR said for the week that rail transportation of U.S. petroleum productions increased 46.3 percent this week compared to the same period last year. Nine of 20 commodity groups delivered by rail posted increases compared to last year.

For a WEEK? How about just comparing a MONTH? Comparing just a week is not enough time!

It would seem that the unreasonable opposition to new pipelines to carry oil and gas has resulted in increased tanker car traffic on the nations reailroads. Just exactly which method of oil, natural gas and refined product tranportation is best?

My vote goes to pipelines as being both physically and environmentally safest.

Definitely not the safest mode of oil transport.

Drought has lowered many rivers and cut barge traffic. Some may have to carry smaller load to avoid running a ground if allowed to ride th river at all!

Pipelines are more efficient then trains; for the short term they will be good; pipeline will be better for the long term!

Gee, @HYEgasCA, tell us what you REALLY think.

So, what's your beef with Warren Buffet? The fact that he actually wants the President to raise his taxes?

@tidalwave3, do we have the numbers on who spills more oil, pipelines or trains?

Pipelines take forever to shut down if there's a rupture. At least with a train, you're limited to the oil in the tanker cars if there's an accident.

The railroads are getting the oil out, but pipelines would be much more efficient and cheaper.

Pipelines might be more efficient, @mstearno, but they spill a lot more oil than a train if there's an accident.

The railroads can produce more jobs than the pipeline ever could. Run more tanker cars pulled by more locomotives.

This won't last forever.

If there is a lot of volume, pipelines will be built and the rail will price itself out of a job.

I would guess they can move it by rail cheaper than by truck. If they can keep up with demand by adding cars then maybe the pipeline is a mute point.

Clermont rails are far, far safer than a pipeline....although not as efficient. The spill news from pipelines lately has been once a week, if you count all of the small as well as the large ones.
