Iowa DOT asks motorists to take the 'No-phone challenge'

GasBuddy Blog -- There's a good reason why our grandparents used to tell us 'silence is golden.' For too many of us, the tremendous value of those simple lessons they tried to teach us is lost. Fortunately, the Iowa Dept. of Transportation is still trying!

In the interest of public safety, the Iowa Dept. of Transportation launched its "No phone challenge" as another way to get people to think, pay attention, and hopefully refrain from choosing distractions over the common sense choices for driving safety we should all embrace.

Heading into last weekend, the agency asked motorists this simple question: Can you put your phone down when you are driving?

This should be mandatory in all states.

Distracted driving is just as dangerous as having a cell phone to your ear or a blue tooth device stuck in your ear! If your ears are covered, you can't hear sirens, horns, traffic, voice or anything going on around you that makes noise and it could be important!!!! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012

Amazing how many people here STILL are using their phones! It is hard to report Gas Prices when driving so I just pull off the road to enter Gas Prices (and text if I have to). We all got spoiled with cell phones. How did we manage 20 years ago? I do know some people who can safelt drive while using a phone but I am in favor of no phone while driving.
